January 9th and 10th the Outer Banks Wedding Association will be hosting their annual Wedding Weekend + Expo!  Tickets and information are available online. To those attending the show, here are three things you should plan on doing in order to avoid information overload.

1.  Purchase your tickets early to avoid standing in line when the doors open on Sunday, January 10th.

2.  Pre-print your name and address information on small stickers to avoid writing it repeatedly at the show.  Placing your sticker in the "would like more information" sign-up sheets at the various booths of vendors you find interesting is a timesaver.

3.  Bring your camera!  Everybody has one these days and it's a great tool to use at the show.  If you find a booth you are interested in learning more from but don't have time to stop and talk,take a photo to use as a reference point just in case the show closes before you've had a chance to meet with that professional.  Later, back at your hotel room, you'll have the images you can refer too.

An engagement session is a great way to get to know your photographer, develop and build trust/rapport with your photographer and to become familiar with your photographer's style of shooting. The engagement shoot is designed for you to experience your time together in a fun, light hearted way and, at the same time, it will include some romantic moments that can show the intensity of love shared between you two. How many professional images of you with your loved one do you have in your apartment, home or office that show all the facets of your relationship in high quality imagery? I'm not talking about the snap shots your friends took of you two at the latest outing or the couple's shot with you holding the camera at arms-length away, high overhead. Those are great, fun candid images to be treasured, no argument from me. But what I'm talking about is something more.

The engagement session is all about YOU! Be creative about what you wear, where you decide to shoot, time of day and what it really is about you two as a couple that makes you two click. Bring your dog to the shoot or maybe some wine while walking under the pier? Also, look to other websites for inspiration. Remember, the engagement shoot is a time for your photographer to learn about you and for you to build trust and rapport with your photographer...all before the big day. But who said you couldn't have fun too? Once you've invested your time and have seen the final results, you'll be glad you had your engagement photos taken.

Planning your bridal portrait session with your photographer is the secret to getting the style of bridal portrait you want.

First, have your hair and make-up trial runs scheduled for the same day as your bridal portrait. This will give you an idea of how the whole ensemble will look prior to the big day and, if there's something you want to tweak, you now have time to do some tweaking to get the look you really want.

Second, go into the bridal portrait session with a purpose. If having the 24x36 wall portrait of yourself gazing down at your bouquet isn't your style, that's ok. Many of the brides I've worked with in the past are not interested in the bridal portrait for themselves but their mother's have been the one's who wanted that image for their home. As your photographer, I listen and want to take care of both needs....the mothers and the bride's. If you are more interested in a fashion style shoot, we can do that too. Communication is key so ask questions, brings ideas with you and share what it is you want to receive from the session or, if it's easier, what it is you do not want to receive.

Lastly, be BOLD! If there's ever a time in your life where vanity is a "good thing" it's during your bridal portrait session. Your photographer will love you for it!!!

The bridal portrait session is steeped in tradition but doesn't have to be stuffy, all posed and the like. Depending upon the desired results that have been discovered and shared from the planning session, there can be a fashion twist added into the session that meets the tastes of both the bride and her mother. The traditional portrait can highlight the bride in her gown while the fashion twist can highlight the bride's personality while wearing her gown. Both go well together!

Wedding day make-up is a delicate subject. To look your best without your photos looking dated within a few short years, you should aim for a more polished version of your everyday look. It's a fine balancing act-looking natural without appearing washed out.

10 Tips for Wedding Day Make-up

1. With all the last-minute nerves on the morning of your wedding, it's worth thinking about having a steadier hand apply your make-up. Hire a professional make-up artist or ask a trusted friend to help.
2. Whether you decide to hire a hair stylist and make-up artist, you should visit their salon or ask the professional to come to your home.  Either way you go is not the point, having at least one trial run before the big day is more the issue. 
3. Avoid going for a dramatic new image on your wedding day. Stick to a more natural effect, so that you'll look like yourself-just a slightly more glamorous version.
4. Certain photography techniques, such as soft focus, can cause lost facial definition in your images.  Try to define your features as much as possible, while avoiding the hard lines of eye pencils and liquid liners. Blend a little eyeshadow instead.
5. Pinky-brown lipsticks whiten teeth whereas orange or red can make them look brownish. If you have very pale skin, a cherry red lipstick can look a bit harsh. Steer clear of overly pale or pearlised lipstick, and go easy on the lip liner.
6. Take extra care with your makeup if planning on having any black & white photography.  Dark red lipstick turns black and heavy-handed blusher will look even darker in black-and-white photos, while pastel colours can fade out completely.  
7. Make sure you wear waterproof mascara. Weddings can be very emotional and this way you'll avoid the panda look.  Kiss mascara from Blinc is one option as are faux eyelashes.  Both are worth looking into for "what to wear" on your wedding day.
8. Pluck your eyebrows and wax your legs at least four days before the wedding so any redness has time to calm down.
9. Treat yourself to a professional manicure. Your hands are likely to be the focus of attention, from the minute you sign the register to the cutting of the wedding cake-and everyone will want to look at your ring.
10. Remember to spare a few moments to freshen up your make-up throughout the day.  Ask your professional what items are best to keep in your Wedding Day Emergency Kit.

Complete Your Fairy Tale Wedding with a Honeymoon in The Castle. . .

You're planning the perfect wedding. Of course you want to follow it with the perfect honeymoon. Imagine a picturesque harbor dotted with boats bobbing gently against the docks. Sea gulls and pelicans circle lazily overhead. Rising above the live oak and cedar trees are the multiple shingled towers and gables that are characteristic of The Castle on Silver Lake Bed & Breakfast Inn on Ocracoke Island. Lovingly and expertly built by local craftsmen as a private retreat for industrialist and local legend Sam Jones, the Castle and accompanying Castle Villas provide the perfect setting for an absolutely unforgettable honeymoon.

Jones, who first came to Ocracoke in the late 1930s, fell in love with the island home of his wife's relatives. The construction of the Castle began in the 1950s and took nearly two decades to complete. Once known as Berkley Castle, the final building encompassed 12,500 square feet as additional rooms were added over the years. In his glory days, Sam Jones hosted lavish parties in its ballroom. Used as a corporate retreat, costume balls and square dances were held, set to the music of talented local musicians. Guests played croquet on the bulkheaded lawns with the finest view of the sparkling Silver Lake harbor on the island. Local watermen traded fish stories and whale tales at the neighboring Whittler's house, also built for Jones.

Handpicked cypress was used to build the Federal style mantels that adorned the fireplaces and dancers dosey-doed on the quarter sawn fir used in the ballroom. Jones furnished the Castle with oriental rugs and ornately carved Victorian furnishings as well as the art deco style. It is said that he when he ran out of space for the rugs, he layered them on top of one another! The Castle's historic photographs chronicle Sam Jones' eclectic style and his deep connection with the island and its people.

After his death in 1977, Jones' masterpiece lay vacant and neglected for nearly 20 years. In 1994 it was purchased and renovated by two local businessmen and longtime friends. They bought it along with the house known as the Whittler's Club, which is now a private residence. Every available inch of the enormous original structure was saved except the heavily deteriorated breezeway. A six year renovation project culminated in what is now The Castle on Silver Lake Bed & Breakfast Inn and Castle Villas.

The Castle offers 11 rooms, each with a private bath, television and a small refrigerator. Three rooms are equipped with whirlpool tubs and the unique third floor Lighthouse Suite has two sitting rooms in addition to the bedroom area. The downstairs den offers satellite TV and a custom made pool table. The entire Castle is furnished in exquisite style that reflects its rich history.  A sumptuous buffet breakfast is served every morning that includes eggs, biscuits, pancakes, fried potatoes, cheese grits, bacon, grilled sausage, fresh fruit, juices, muffins, and pastries.

Tucked behind the Castle are 16 courtyard one-, two-, and three-bedroom luxury villas that complement the magnificent architecture of the Castle. Eight of the villas are designed with master suites. Each villa has a fully equipped kitchen, screened porch or deck, washer, dryer and whirlpool tub.

In today's world of wedding planning, the traditions and roles of key individuals is ever-changing.  While many books today cover the role of the lead in this dance known as a wedding, the bride, there is one role that many times goes overlooked, the role of the groom.

The groom's role is one that goes undefined in many wedding books.  While today's wedding books tell brides about the roles of certain people such as the mother of the bride, the father of the bride, bridesmaids, groomsmen.etc, the books fail to mention the role of one of the key players, the groom.  They go to great lengths to stress the importance of the maid of honor and best man, their duties and roles, but what about the groom?  Remember brides, when your big day arrives, do not forget about that important person you're vowing to never leave for the rest of your life.  He needs some guidance as to what his role is in the show, and from the looks of the internet so do you ladies.

The groom is what I term as a floater.  He is the prize the bride is allowed to dangle, no offense guys, in front of her friends and family and say, "Hey! Look what I've got".  Grooms, to position yourself for the most enjoyable time of your life, I advise you take the role of the peacemaker.  While I agree this sometimes maybe a tough thing to do, remember that your job, whether you realize it or not, is to keep things peaceful and see to it that everyone the bride wants, makes it to the big day.  Groom, take care to assure that the squabbles that typically erupt during this tense time do not permanently damage relationships that were years in the making.  I advise to constantly remind everyone close to the bride "This day is about her and it is her wishes we wish to honor".  Put like this, most people involved in this process will be gently reminded to keep their opinions in check, thus making you the hero of the day to that special someone, your bride.

Another helpful hint to grooms, keep the communication lines open between both families.  During these tense times that surround a wedding, make sure to involve both families in the little events.  For example, why not offer each side the opportunity to do readings if the wedding is in church and toasts at the reception.  These are just a few of the many creative tidbits that surround this joyous day and can help ensure that it remains that way.

In closing ladies, I remind you to every now and again check in with the groom.  He may have valuable information pertaining to unstable conditions that just might save you from a disaster.  Don't forget, while the woman is normally the HEAD of the wedding planning, the groom is the NECK, and the HEAD cannot turn without the help of the NECK.

Presented here, are a few tips which would help all you blushing brides out there to get a grip on the Miss Manners you need to follow as per Wedding Etiquette.

1. The wedding gown

According to Miss Manners, the modern day Wedding Etiquette is not all that stern. Brides of today do not have to stick to the traditional ultra white, crème and beige wedding gowns. They can rather experiment with their favorite pastels or even with any color which would go along with the theme especially in case of a Destination wedding. An aquamarine or turquoise colored gown to match the fresh sea water is a great option in case of a beach wedding.

It is more important that you select a dress which would compliment your skin tone and the one which would, at the same time, accentuate your curves in the best way possible.

2. The shoes

Ankle strap and open toed wedding shoes are allowed by Wedding Etiquette say, Miss Manners and white is no more the indispensable color for the wedding shoe. Crème, beige, ivory or even a red colored shoe can be worn to go with a wedding gown in ultra white.In this regard, comfort and style score high. Miss Manners say, less ornamented shoes are most preferred, though rhinestones do not confront Wedding Etiquette in any way.

3. Announcement of the engagement

For the first time brides, the most economic and simple way to announce the engagement to close friends and family is during a dinner. However, in case you are ready to burn a hole in your pocket, an engagement ball can be hosted specially for this purpose or an announcement can be made for the same in newspapers, say Miss Manners.Miss Manners suggest second time brides to speak to their kids before making an announcement in public. Secondly, it is necessary to discuss about the plans to their parents prior to their ex-spouse. Wedding Etiquette is, however, not breached if the bride, who may not have an offspring from her ex-spouse, has neglected to tell him about the engagement. Unless the bride has joint custody of children with her ex-spouse, she is completely free from any kind of obligation towards him.

Destination weddings are so much fun, and they are more popular than ever. There are some things about planning a wedding in an exotic land that might be different than planning a wedding near your home. To get the most out of your destination wedding, try these simple tips:

• Book a site that also will make a dream honeymoon spot for you and your spouse. Having your wedding and honeymoon all in one place is called a"weddingmoon", and many resorts will offer special packages if you choose to do this.

• Arrive at your destination a few days before the ceremony. This will give you time to check up on the details of your wedding, as well as allowing time for any travel delays or late luggage. • Send out save the date cards well in advance of a destination wedding (6 months or more). "I remember having one couple present their marriage license to the minister after the ceremony and he quickly pointed out that they were married in a different county then what was on the marriage license.   At that time, according to the marriage laws of NC, being wed in a different county then where the couple applied for/received their marriage license  meant the ceremony was not binding.  More to the point, it made the ceremony the couple just had null and void.  Imagine that kind of surprise on your wedding day! " 

Nowadays, the marriage license application laws for NC are have been updated and are provided below.  Just know this, having a physical exam before receiving a marriage license is no longer a requirement.  Also, a marriage license purchased in the state of NC can be applied for/used anywhere within the state of NC and is valid for 60 days from the date it was issued.

Marriage licenses are issued by the Register of Deeds in the Dare County Justice Center, 962 Marshall C. Collins Dr., Manteo.  Both parties must apply in person for the license.  The following items are needed:

-picture id

-social security card or certificate with your social security number listed (W2 or pay  stub)

-birth certificate if under 21

-divorce papers with judge's signature

 

The marriage license is $50 and good for 60 days after issuance.  The Register of Deeds can be reached at (252) 475-5970, between 8:30 am -4:30pm., Monday through Friday.  The office is closed on holidays and weekends.  For civil ceremonies, a Dare County magistrate can perform the service.  Ceremonies are performed at the magistrates office in Manteo, located on Driftwood Drive (252) 475-9228.  A marriage application can be filled out at locations throughout the state of NC and can be used anywhere within the state of NC.

Contact the town in which your ceremony will be held regarding any additional permits or restrictions.
